Light on drawn skin
Sabrina Alves is tattooed from the soles of her feet to her scalp. Not individual motifs but one continuous work: mandalas, blossoms and ornaments running across shoulder, back and legs as if they had been designed for this body.
For a camera that is a different job. Bare skin is modelled softly, with big lights and long transitions. On Sabrina that is exactly what fails: the drawings collapse into a grey field and the body disappears. You have to work harder and place contrast where the lines run — which is the whole lesson of the weekend, and it transfers to anything with structure: fabric, water, scars, age.
Why now
Sabrina is growing her hair back. She is waiting for this workshop before she does — afterwards the tattooed scalp will not be visible for a long time.
Three signature setups
Mirrors, neon and fog: a mirrored wall, coloured tubes as the only light source, dry ice and a fog machine. The fog makes the beams visible, the mirror doubles body and drawings, and because the tubes are hard and directional the tattoos stand as areas of contrast instead of a grey carpet.
Water, window and mirror: quieter and harder. Hard backlight through a large window, the body as a shape against the bright ground, water on the floor as a reflector. Long lines, few props, everything carried by posture and edge.
Big Nudes, after Helmut Newton: bright ground, hard cast shadow, patent leather and fur against bare skin. Frontal, upright, no coyness. Whoever thinks hard light is easy finds out here how precisely shadow edge and standpoint belong together.
Getting there
The studio is in Oberstenfeld, Germany — 25 minutes from Stuttgart, 20 from Heilbronn, with parking at the door. Stuttgart Airport is about an hour away, and the ICE stops in Stuttgart. Several participants each year travel in from abroad.
Language
The workshop is run in German, but Patrick speaks English and every setup is shown as well as explained — lamp positions, modifiers, aperture. Photographers from outside Germany have taken part before and had no trouble following along.
How a day runs

Arrival, briefing, first setup
A short introduction to Sabrina's tattoos and what they mean for the light. Then the first setup goes up.

Water and window
Hard backlight through the window, water as a reflective surface. Thought in black and white, with hard drawing.

Break
Drinks, snacks, and a look at the frames on screen.

Mirror, portrait, nude
Mirror work for doublings, plus tight portraits and full-body. Everyone comes to the set on their own.

Cannot make it in person? On the Sunday we stream the shoot with Sabrina and Patrick — an education stream with everything announced and explained, for anyone who wants to learn without standing in the studio.
An education stream, not adult content: every lighting setup is announced and explained — lamp positions, modifiers, aperture, and why a mood looks the way it does. Questions go through the chat and get answered on air.
